The ERQUIMANS WEEKLY Plant waterers honored, 2 Pirates seek first win at Camden, 7 "News from Next Door" OCTOBER 17, 2012 - OCTOBER 23, 2012 50 cents „ OCT 1 7 2011 f Harvey Point focus of Bin Laden raid Reports: Facility was training site By CATHY WILSON Staff Writer Perquimans County made the international news last week on specula tion that Harvey Point was the location for practice runs of last year’s Navy Seal assault on Osama bin Laden’s compound in Pak istan — a raid that resulted in the al-Qaeda terrorist leader’s death. In spite of the attention focused on their commu nity, officials appear un moved by the current news surrounding their secre tive neighbor and what may or may not go on be hind its gates. What occurs at the Har vey Point Defense Testing Activity base, located on a southern peninsula in the county, is only known to those who work there or who occasionally train there, officials say. “The county doesn’t re ally comment on the mis sion of the (Harvey Point) base or what they do,” said County Manager Frank Heath when asked if he be lieves practice for the bin Laden mission actually oc curred in the county “We consider them (Harvey Point) an asset to the coun ty They offer jobs that are badly needed. It’s common knowledge around here what they do out there, but it’s not our place to com ment on what they do.” Recent attention to the facility stems from com ments in a book written by a retired Navy SEAL who says he took part in the May 2011 mission to cap ture or kill bin Laden. The book details the mission, including what the author says were practice runs made earlier at a North Carolina facility. Published accounts say the book, written by Matt Bissonnette who was once a SEAL Team 6 member, in cludes information about the team practicing before the assault on bin Laden’s compound. Local man struck and killed in Greenville From staff reports A Hertford man was struck and killed early Sunday while walking in the road on U.S. 264 in Greenville, according to the State Highway Patrol. Ethan Jennings, 23, was hit just after midnight on Sunday while walking on U.S. 264 near North Cam pus Crossing, Trooper W.A. Hardison said. Her recent handcrafted rec ipe for Tool Box Jalapeno Pop pers won her a first place blue ribbon and $150 cash at the North Carolina State Fair over the weekend. Plus, she won a handsome apron from Cabot Cheese, the company that sponsored the '“Less Guilt - Great Recipe” contest. When preparing her unique recipe, don’t be surprised if you find her milling in her tool shed before heading to the kitchen. She uses an electric drill and propane torch to as semble and finish off her pop pers. “I actually considered using a caulking gun to fill the cheese- filled poppers, but I didn’t have a chance to get to the hardware store to see if they had caulk ing gun blanks,” she laughed. They’re about the size of a thumb, she said. She tried to figure out how to clean out the peppers with cutting them so she tried her electric drill which worked like a charm. Then she tried charring the peppers with a propane torch instead of lighting the grill, and found that added a smokey flavor to her finished creation. “First, the electric drill and then the propane torch, and all of a sudden, I had my theme,” she said. WEST The Daily Advance Perquimans Republicans are seeking to pick up a third seat on the county Board of Commissioners in this fall’s general election. The six-member Perquimans board currently has two Republican members: Decision 2012 chairman Ben Hobbs and Sue Wei mar. Weimar chose not to seek re-election this fall, but two other Republicans—Kyle Jones and Matthew Peeler — are seeking to replace her and take a third seat on the board. Demofcrats Janice McKenzie Gole, an incumbent commissioner, and Julie Stamper Phelps are also seeking two of the three seats up for election. Demo crat Commissioner Mack Nixon is not seeking re-election. Depending on what happens Nov. 6, the Perquimans board will either continue to look the way it does now — with four Democrats and two Repub’- licans — or be evenly split between the two parties.
